Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Forces Claim Numerous Fatalities in Recent Border Fighting
Fresh fighting broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier early on Wednesday morning, with both parties accusing the opposing side of initiating lethal confrontations.
The Pakistani military announced that its troops had killed "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and wounded numerous others in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Taliban government spokesman said that twelve Afghan civilians had been killed and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He further stated that several military personnel had been lost their lives. None of the alleged deaths could be independently confirmed.
Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since blasts rocked Afghanistan recently, which Kabul blamed on Pakistan. The Afghan leadership deny claims that it is sheltering armed groups aiming at Pakistan.
Social Media and Military Engagements
The opposing forces are not only battling for the advantage on the frontier, but also on digital platforms, attempting to persuade the general population that their faction is causing greater losses.
The most recent fighting come after intense cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Taliban claimed to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Islamabad reported it neutralized two hundred "Taliban and linked insurgents". The claimed death tolls provided by both parties could not be independently verified.
A few days of unstable peace that had persisted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday.
On-the-Ground Accounts and Impact
Footage allegedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been shared online and on social channels, including images said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of guard positions demolished. These recordings have not been authenticated.
A informant in the border area in Afghanistan stated that clashes erupted at around 4 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT on Tuesday). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, reported that "intense clashes continued for almost five hours".
"We observed unmanned aircraft and jets soaring over us, some of our relatives are injured," they added.
A doctor in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak stated that he tallied "7 fatalities and 36 wounded transported to the medical center", including men, females and children.
The situation were "strained" and more casualties were being transferred to hospital, he said.
Displacement and International Reactions
A regional Taliban official in the area announced that "numerous of households have been displaced since the previous evening due to the heavy fighting". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were targeted by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the bodies of 2 Pakistani military members.
In a distinct night-time engagement on the western border, the Islamabad's forces claimed that twenty-five to thirty militant and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.
The hostilities have led to appeals for de-escalation from foreign nations including China and Russia, as well as a proposal from the American leader that he could step in to facilitate a ceasefire.
On Wednesday, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and evacuations because of the fighting.
"I urge all parties to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard civilians, and abide by international law," he stated.
Long-Standing Tensions
Islamabad has for years alleged the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistani militants to operate from their territory and battle against the Islamabad government in an attempt to impose a strict Islamic-led system of governance.
The Afghan Taliban government has always denied this.
