Alphabet Commits $15bn to Establish AI Computing Facility in the Indian Subcontinent

Computing Infrastructure
The Nation stands as a prime location for computing facilities owing to its low data costs and quickly expanding internet user base.

The parent firm of Google Alphabet plans to commit $15 billion for constructing an AI computing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The facility, which will be set up in the harbor town of Visakhapatnam city, is set to become a component of Google's global network of AI centres distributed over a dozen nations.

"It's the largest AI hub that we plan to invest in anywhere in the world, outside of the United States," Google Cloud's chief executive said at an gathering in capital Delhi recently, noting that the financial commitment will be allocated over the next five years.

This declaration comes at a time US President Donald Trump has been urging US firms to give priority to investments within the country.

India's Growing Role in AI Infrastructure

The nation has risen as a major hub for AI data centres. India's inexpensive data services and quickly expanding internet user base have made it a focal point for cloud and AI expansion for technology leaders.

"The infrastructure will deliver our industry-leading technology to companies and individuals in the country, accelerating AI innovation and stimulating expansion across the country," commented Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

Project Details

A definitive arrangement to complete the initiative is scheduled for signing this Tuesday, local government officials announced.

"It is a massive leap for our state's digital future, innovation, and worldwide position," said the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.

The project will combine computing and artificial intelligence facilities with green energy infrastructure and an expanded fibre-optic network.

Data Infrastructure Plans

This initiative is part of the state government's plan to establish six gigawatts of data center capability by 2029.

Data centres are physical facilities that contain the computer and network hardware that companies use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.

These include computer servers, data storage systems and connectivity devices like firewalls and routers, combined with the necessary power and cooling systems to operate them.

Investment Incentives

In Andhra Pradesh, the state authorities has been offering subsidised land and energy to draw international investors.

Sector Expansion

India's data centre industry has grown rapidly over the past five years, crossing the 1GW capability milestone in 2024 and nearly tripling its 2019 capacity.
