Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Addresses Trump's Threat to Move World Cup Matches from Boston

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, suggested that the municipality was ready for a confrontation with US President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup games from Gillette Stadium, situated 22 miles southwest of Boston.

Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to respond to criticism from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "far-left." Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "address its issues."

A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.

She continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for control, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at individuals and communities who stand their ground and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." She concluded by stressing her support for the city, saying, "Fully committed for our city."

Trump's Statements and FIFA Involvement

Earlier this week, Infantino was seen with Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the White House and presented World Cup and Club World Cup awards to the president as gifts.

On Tuesday, Trump was questioned on unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police car being burned. Trump replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the president of the organization, who's great."

Trump continued, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." The president also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Information

President Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with the FIFA president about moving games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 host cities across North America.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to July 19 in the coming year.
