Former FBI head James the former director has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His attorney entered the answer on his behalf in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings terminated for multiple reasons including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was indicted just days after the former president urged his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they aimed to file various legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a trial, arguing the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to handle the case.

Mr Comey's proceedings was first overseen by Erik Siebert, who left his position under pressure from the former president after his examination into another rival - the New York official - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the magistrate recite his rights and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about four months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the moment, he was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender the candidate's use of a private email server. Charges against the candidate were not filed, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors allege the former director lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he provided false information to the upper house by saying he had not permitted a person at the agency to disclose to news outlets information about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, hinder and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Via social media James Comey posted to his Instagram after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged Donald Trump of acting like a "dictator".

"Our household have known for years that there are consequences to opposing the former president," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "So let's have a court case."

The charges against James Comey emerged after the former president posted on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Pam Bondi, charge James Comey and other people.
