The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house near the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who escaped after the incident was found not long after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area showed the structure reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official believed the explosion had occurred on a level above the entrance and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
