Federal Government Poised to Dispatch Dozens Government Officers to the Bay Area

The Trump administration seemed ready on Wednesday to send scores of federal agents to the northern California for a large-scale immigration enforcement operation, sparking criticism from local politicians.

Information of the Mission

Details of the mission were still emerging, but it will reportedly involve approximately 100+ federal agents, according to reports. The agents are expected to begin using the US Coast Guard base in the East Bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It was still uncertain whether national guard troops would join the operation.

Official Response

The operation is the result of an extended period of warnings by Donald Trump to take action against the Democratic-run city. The state's leader Gavin Newsom denounced the decision, describing it as “right out of the autocrat's manual”.

“He dispatches unidentified officers, he sends out customs officers, he deploys immigration officials, he generates worry and terror in the neighborhood so that he can claim credit for addressing that by dispatching the state troops,” Newsom said. “This mirrors the arsonist fighting the blaze.”

Municipal Preparation

San Francisco is the most recent major city targeted by the federal effort of large-scale detentions. The mission is likely to cause a standoff between the administration and municipal authorities who have vowed to prevent militarized immigration enforcement in the city.

San Franciscans have been readying for an extended period for Trump to fulfill repeated threats to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, San Francisco’s mayor reiterated that the city was ready.

“For months, we have been anticipating the likelihood of a potential government operation in our city,” said the mayor, adding that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and guarantee our departments are organized before any federal deployment.”

Legal Context

In spite of judicial disputes to missions in a multiple urban areas, including Chicago, the Pacific Northwest and Southern California, Trump has asserted “unquestioned power” to send the state troops in cities, pointing to the federal statute which enables presidents limited power to dispatch personnel on US soil.

Community Response

Newsom – who previously served as San Francisco’s chief executive – had vowed to intervene “right away” to a operation in the city. “The idea that the national administration can send forces into our cities with no justification based on facts, no monitoring, no accountability, no respect for local authority – it represents an infringement on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.

Local organizations, including social justice nonprofits created during the initial federal leadership, have prepared to swiftly gather a mass rally in the city, as well as candlelight gatherings at community centers.

Neighborhood Impact

In San Francisco’s Mission district, a predominantly Latino community, city supervisor stated to media last week she and her residents had been bracing for this moment. “The time that workers cease employment, when people of color cannot move about freely without the concern of national personnel targeting based on race and detaining them, the time when students avoid classrooms, grow too frightened to go to the supermarket or physician,” she said. “What we have been preparing for in the Mission is basically a halt the extent of which we have not witnessed since the pandemic.”

Military Status

About 300 out of several thousand state state soldiers continue under national command under an command from Trump. Approximately 200 of them had been dispatched to the neighboring state, where they were remaining in uncertainty amid a legal battle over their assignment.

This time, Newsom said he had called the California national guard troops under his authority to staff charity kitchens during the federal closure.
