Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Team Versus India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a shock inclusion.
Recent Form Lead to Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI innings.
Labuschagne has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a Test return as Australia search for a solution to their top-order woes.
Bowling Returns and Fitness News
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Schedule
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to seal a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from October 29.
