Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World

The seasonal content update for Minecraft has arrived — and it brings with it the initial fresh armament introduced into the title since the mace made its debut. The javelin is now available and it has the potential to revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates a host of fresh elements and enhancements related to riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," explained a senior product manager. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your companions on horseback, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an combat move ideally crafted for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead continues. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and deal greater injury [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] ideal for knightly combat."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The wild enjoyment doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for equipping the wings and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it deserves to be an competitive event immediately.

Another major addition in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is inspired by the nautilus shells found in-game for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no necessity to surface for fresh air.

The rest of the additions are largely things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus appearing in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you are able to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've been thinking about this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also introduce something for underwater," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also points out that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you find underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a analogous exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross bodies of water while atop a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it is worthy of.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

In summary, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the pandemonium it invites — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Combine that with the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mayhem Mounts update is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
