Norris Edges Closer to Title as Verstappen Takes Vegas Grand Prix Win
Lando Norris currently holds a thirty point lead over teammate Oscar Piastri with just fifty-eight points up for grabs in the remaining events
McLaren's Lando Norris moved closer to a maiden world title with second place in the Vegas race following Red Bull's Max Verstappen
Norris currently heads fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who finished in fourth place behind Mercedes' George Russell, by 30 points heading to the second-to-last race in Qatar this coming weekend
The Briton will win the title in the desert as long as he does not lose over five points to Piastri in Losail, or seventeen to Verstappen
The Australian driver, so impressive in the first half of the championship, has not finished on the top three for six consecutive events
"Max had a good race. I made the mistake at the beginning and was overly aggressive on that first turn," said Norris
"It's still a positive outcome to secure second. I've got to praise Max and his team"
Following Qatar, the final race of the season takes place in Abu Dhabi on December 7th
The key stories of one of Formula 1's most prestigious races included:
Lando Norris continued his progress towards the title despite the victory to Max Verstappen
Piastri's challenging run of form continued as his title hopes diminish
A superb victory for Max Verstappen to keep him in the title fight
Recoveries for both Ferrari drivers, following a difficult qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton securing a single point for tenth place after beginning at the back
Verstappen Remains in Title Contention
Verstappen overtakes Norris at the start after the British driver ran wide at the first corner
At the start, Norris was faithful to his claim that he was "not here not to take risks" as he fought hard to defend his advantage from starting first from Verstappen
However following an aggressive move in front of Verstappen to block the Verstappen's challenge on the inside, the McLaren driver misjudged his braking point and ran deep into the corner
This enabled Max Verstappen to overtake into the first place while the British driver lost the runner-up spot to Russell
During two virtual safety cars for several opening-lap incidents, including at the start when the Racing Bulls Liam Lawson collided with Piastri, Verstappen slowly established dominance on the race
Russell undertook an early tire change for the more durable compound, but Lando Norris and Verstappen stayed out
The McLaren driver stopped five laps after the Mercedes and Verstappen 10
Verstappen was could return still in the first place, George Russell having been unable to catch up on the Red Bull car despite his fresher tyres
Norris returned behind George Russell from his stop but following a several careful circuits to allow his tires to warm up, quickly closed his three-point-three second gap to the Mercedes driver and overtook into runner-up position on the thirty-fourth lap
The British driver asked his race engineer how to run the rest of his event, effectively questioning whether he should settle for second or attack
He was instructed to "chase down Verstappen" but it soon became clear he had little opportunity. Verstappen was easily able to repel Norris' challenges, and in the closing stages the gap extended significantly as the McLaren car began to suffer a technical issue which has so far remained unidentified
Even with losing nearly three seconds a lap, Lando Norris was able to defend against Russell because of the size of the advantage he had built while pursuing Max Verstappen
The Red Bull driver's sixth win of the championship - just one less than both McLaren teammates - was achieved in dominant fashion and keeps him in championship contention, at minimum theoretically, even if he needs problems for Lando Norris in both remaining races to overtake him
"It's still a big gap, we consistently attempt to optimize all we've got," Max Verstappen said
"During the coming events we will try to take victory in the race and at the end of Abu Dhabi we will know where we end up, but I'm very proud of the entire team"
'Frustrating Race' for Piastri
Oscar Piastri began in fifth but dropped two places on the first circuit after being clouted by Lawson, who was soon eliminated of contention by a broken front wing
He followed Lawson's teammate Isack Hadjar for the first 15 laps before overtaking him on the Strip but also position to Leclerc, who he was able to repass during the tire change phase
Piastri ended up after Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who ran nearly the whole event on hard tyres after stopping during the initial VSC, but was given a five second penalty for a starting procedure violation, which was not immediately obvious on replays
"It was a disappointing event from pretty much beginning to end in certain respects," Oscar Piastri told race broadcasters
Questioned about how he would approach the remaining events, he said: "Simply try to position myself in the optimal situation I can. I obviously require several of factors to favor me at this stage to win, but all I can do is make myself in the ideal situation to take advantage if something happens"
Leclerc held on in sixth place, insufficiently close to benefit from Kimi Antonelli's time penalty, while Sainz dropped to seventh at the finish, his Williams missing the speed to challenge with the leading outfits in the dry conditions, after his impressive performance to start third in the wet weather
Isack Hadjar took eighth place before Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton
The seven-time champion executed a strong getaway, rising to thirteenth on the opening circuit and continued to advance positions
He became trapped in a DRS train with a group of additional vehicles but was able to employ his electric start to salvage a championship point after the worst qualifying performance of his career
