Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
