World Health Organization Confronts Significant Workforce Reduction Following United States Funding Withdrawal

This international health organization disclosed intentions to reduce its workforce by almost a fourth – totaling over two thousand jobs – before the middle of 2026.

Funding Shortfall Prompts Major Restructuring

This move follows after the US, formerly the agency's biggest donor, pulled out funding earlier this year.

The US government had been contributing approximately eighteen percent of the agency's overall budget, creating a substantial financial shortfall.

Projected Staff Cuts

Based on internal projections, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

The decrease of 2,371 positions comprises job cuts, employees retiring, and natural attrition.

"This year has been among the most difficult in our history, as we have navigated a painful but necessary process of prioritization and realignment," stated the organization's director-general.

Financial Gap Persists

This Geneva-based organization now confronts a budget gap of $1.06bn for the upcoming biennium, representing nearly a quarter of its total funding.

This amount marks an improvement from a prior estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars reported in May.

Not Included Funding

The financial calculations exclude an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from current discussions with various donors.

The spokesperson for the organization noted that the present unsecured part of the biennial budget is actually smaller than in previous years, attributing this to several factors:

  • A smaller overall budget size
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach effort
  • An increase in participating countries' required fees

This restructuring process is currently nearing its completion, allowing the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
